To understand how the world outside works better, you should experience it in a part-time job, as a volunteer or in a special program.
“LPS Click” has agencies ready to help. Some offer job readiness workshops and job search assistance; others are looking for volunteers or have really cool programs for teens. And all are eager to hear from you.
What are employers, colleges and technical schools, the military all looking for? Students with strong reading, writing, math, and computer skills.
And you can learn everywhere, not just in school: discussing issues on the Lawrence Youth Council, creating sets for Acting Out! theater, caring for animals at MSPCA's Nevins Farm.
But it's up to you to stay smart all year. Read, read, read. Choose hard courses. Earn good grades. Be curious.
Everybody needs it sometime. Some issues are personal: immigration, health care, counseling. Others are about job training, career, and college.
Lawrence has lots of agencies to help with all those issues (and more), and many have staff and offices at LHS.
All of these organizations know how to multitask. Some offer learning AND work opportunities, like Job Corps Lawrence; or volunteer AND learning options, like Lawrence General Hospital.
Read about every organization to find what’s just right for you.
First, read everything. Then go to the website of agencies that interest you and “click” around. Look for their posts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media, too. Sign up for their blogs and newsletters. Call, email, and/or drop by to get more information.
It’s up to you to follow up.
